This village called Agios Ioannis (there are several in Crete) is located at the foot of the Thripti Mountains in the Lasithi area, seven kilometers west of Schinokapsala. The distance to the coast is 9 kilometers and the city of Ierapetra is 19 kilometers away.
The village is situated in a very fertile area with many water sources and the area is therefore very green. It consists mainly of pine forests. Not far from Agios Ioannis are the sources and the churches of Psychro.
A large part of the village of Agios Ioannis has narrow streets and stairs and is a walking area. There is a kafenion at the entrance of the village and a little higher up there is a cafe / wine bar / restaurant, where sometimes live music performances are given.
The vast majority of the houses and cottages in Agios Ioannis have been abandoned and are falling apart because most residents have moved to the coast in recent decades, to places like Ferma, Koutsounari and Ierapetra. Prominently present in the village are the large white painted old Church of All Saints St. Panteleimon, which stands on a square and looks out over the sea, and the large, apparently new Church of The Holy Trinity - St. John the Theologian - Michael Archangel, which can be founf slightly lower in the village along the continuous road to the coast.
A little bit outside the village of Agios Ioannis along the road that leads to the coast is the picturesque St. Anthony church. The church was built in 1894 - 1895 around a cave. There is a description next to the church as to what was on display, but it was just closed. Near the church of St. Anthony, between the village and the church, a nice little waterfall can be seen.
