Sithonia is situated west of Athos and is the middle one of the three "fingers" in the south of the Halkidiki peninsula. The landscape is very rugged and mountainous here with small fishing villages and many, sometimes deserted, sandy beaches. The Sithonia Peninsula is a popular holiday destination for both Greeks and foreign tourists. The capitol of the peninsula is Nikiti. There are some interesting sites on Sithonia like the ancient city of Torini, which dates from the 8th century BC.
One of the most popular resorts is Vourvourou which is located in the northeast of the Sithonia peninsula at 120 kilometers distance of Thessaloniki en 10 kilometers south of the town of Agios Nikolaos. Here you will find a pretty nature, beautiful white sandy beaches and the most beautiful blue water. Vourvourou has about 150 permanent residents, but in high season the village attracts many tourists. You will find many shops, mini markets and there is plenty of choice in restaurants and accommodations.
In front of Vourvourou there are nine islands in the sea, making it a very picturesque sight. The largest one is called Diaporos island and it gives Vourvourou the optical illusion as if it is almost laying at a lake. The distance to the mainland is about 200 meters. A plot on the island is for sale with permission to put some kind of construction on it (for instance a hotel), but the rest of the island is a protected nature reserve.
North of Vourvourou you can find the harbour of Ormos Panagias, which arose around an old church. It is seen as part of the town of Agios Nikolaos, but located a few kilometers south of it. Ormos Panagias is a fairly important port from where the boats leave to make an excursion to the Athos peninsula and its monasteries. Karidi beach is the best known beach of Vourvourou, but there are many more beaches and coves in the area. Because the sea is usually pretty quiet and because it is shallow almost everywhere, the area is very much suitable for families with small children. Because there are so many trees in the area and often pine trees grow on the beaches you can find some shade on as good as all the beaches. The beaches in Vourvourou are unspoilt and not organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. Some accommodations that are situated directly at the beach front have put some facilities for their guests on the beach though.
Galini Beach consists of a couple of a small sandy beaches with no facilities, located just northwest of the village of Vourvourou. Around the beaches there are many pine trees for shade and there are a few houses near the beach. The water is shallow. Generally it is very quiet here. Take the first path on the right hand side on a few hundred meters after the camping and walk towards the sea, then take the second left and walk a while parallel to the coast towards the north, go beyond Fteroti beach to get to the beaches of Galini.
Fteroti beach consists of two small but picturesque sandy beaches that are surrounded by pine trees. They are respectively approximately 60 and 130 meters long. At the beach there are a few houses, but it is very quiet. There are no facilities at these beaches. The sea is shallow and the water is clear. For Fteroti beach take the path on your right hand side towards the sea about a kilometer after Livari beach, and after that it's still about half a kilometer towards the coast to reach Fteroti beach.
Livari beach is situated three kilometers northwest of Vourvourou. It is like a peninsula of sand stretching into the sea forming a lagoon, with on the one hand some kind of lake with a few boats in it, and on the other side the open sea. At the beach are some accommodations.
Vourvourou beach is a long and narrow sandy beach that lies in the bay of Vourvourou. It starts with the sandy peninsula at Livari peninsula and ends in the south of the bay. The islands off the coast ensure that the sea is very calm here. There are a few reefs which are worth a visit for snorkelers and divers, and there are a few places where boats are moored. The beach is accessible via a number of roads that run through the village. There are restaurants and accommodations in Vourvourou beach. There is also a campsite and you can rent a boat here to explore the area by sea.
Karidi beach is probably the most popular and perhaps the most beautiful beach in the area of Vourvouro. The beach is situated on the east side of the village and split into two by a rock that is sticking out into the sea. The beach is marked with a sign from the main road. From there it is about a 400 meters walk or drive to the coast. Karidi is a large and sandy beach with no facilities. The water is shallow and therefore suitable for families with small children. In high season it can get a bit crowded here. Karidi beach has no facilities, but the beaches are surrounded by pine trees under which you can find some shade.
Fava beach is tucked away behind the cliffs east of Karidi beach. It consists of three beaches (two large ones and one small) without facilities, which are especially popular with the locals. The beaches are a combination of sand, pebbles and small stones. There are a few trails that lead from the road along private homes to these beaches. The final piece to the beaches you have to walk past houses and through the forest. The sea at Fava beach is shallow. Off the coast are some nice rocks in the sea.
Bara beach lies about five kilometers east of Vourvourou and consists of two quiet pebble beaches. There are no houses directly around the beach and there are no facilities. It is a bit difficult to reach this beach. Because Bara beach is also quite isolated it is sometimes used by naturists. The beach is at the end of a path about 200 meters from the main road. One of the two beaches of Bara is a little bit more difficult to reach than the other. At the edges of the beach you can find some trees for shade.
Koutloumousiou beach is also known as La Cara beach named after the campsite La Cara that is situated here. It is located eight kilometers east of Vourvourou, it is quite large and consists of sand with some small pebbles. The quiet beach is part of the private camping grounds but you can go there at an entrance fee. At the beach there is a mini market, and a restaurant and cafe where you can drink or eat something. There are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. Also there is the opportunity to practice water sports. The beach is about 400 meters away from the main road.
Petras beach is a narrow and secluded beach that lies next to Koutloumousiou beach at 8.5 kilometers distance from Vourvourou. It's not so easy to get there and therefore it is also very quiet. The beach itself consists of sand and pebbles and the bottom of the sea on the coast here is mostly stones in the sand. Sometimes you find some seaweed on the beach, but the water is clear. Around the beach there are trees. To get to Petras beach take the exit (path) after the La Cara campsite. After 500 meters turn left and then it is another 200 meters of climbing down. There are no facilities at the beach and it's best to bring plastic water sandals if you want to go into the water here.
Zografou beach is part of camping Porto Elea, but you can visit the beach if you wan to. The beach is about nine kilometers away from Vourvourou and the exit is marked with a sign. You drive a while over a dirt road and then you can leave your car in the parking place just outside the campsite. Zografou beach is an organized beach where sun beds and umbrellas are for hire. There is also a restaurant and there is the possibility to practice water sports. The north side of the beach consists mainly of pebbles and the seabed here has many stones. The south side is better, with sand and pebbles both on the beach and in the water. The beach is surrounded by hills with tall trees that provide shade on hot days.
Banana beach is an about 200 meters long sandy beach with fine sand and blue-green water. This beautiful beach is 10 kilometers away from Vourvourou. Banana beach is named after the beach bar that sits here, that also rents out sunbeds and umbrellas. The exit to Banana Beach is about 1 kilometer after Zografou beach and is marked with a sign that says "Rodia beach bar". On the beach are many young people and there can be fairly noisy music. On the east side of the beach, behind a rock, you can find another beautiful beach. This beach is only 50 meters long but well worth a visit.
Oneirou beach is an organized beach and sandy beach at 12 kilometers distance away from Vourvourou. The beach is marked with a sign and can be reached via a 800 meter long unpaved road going down. At the beach is a camp site with a beach bar and restaurant. Oneirou beach is named after this camping. It is sandy beach and also the sea bottom here consists mainly of sand, so it's easy to go into the sea. On the beach there are sun beds and umbrellas for rent. On both sides of Oneiro beach, about 400 meters away, are other beaches that you can reach by climbing over rocks or by boat.
