| The beaches and the naturist beaches on the island of Alonissos in Greece |
Renting a small motor is ideal for visiting those difficult to reach beaches. There are many small bays with private beaches and plenty of beaches for naturists, including some beaches that are not so difficult to reach, such as the magnificent Agios Dimitrios Beach or Kokkinokastro. A large part of the roads on Alonissos is unpaved, and here an SUV is not a luxury. For hikers the island of Alonissos is a paradise, with peace and places where the shade of the trees cools you down on a hot day. So after a walk and some climbing you sometimes find a completely deserted beach with a beautiful azure blue sea. |
| Agalou Lakka Beach |
Agalou Lakka Beach is a small pebble beach and because it is so remote, there are no facilities. You'll have to bring your own water and some food if you want to sunbathe here. As I understand you have to climb over a fence and walk through a field to get there. It seems to me that because it is so isolated this is also an excellent beach for naturists. |
| Agioi Anargyroi Beach |
The beach is named after the nearby Byzantine church of Agioi Anargyroi, which dates from the 13th century. It stands at the end of a cliff and from here there is a fantastic view over the Aegean Sea. From this church there is a dirt road through the forest that leads to the beach. You pass the ruins of a villa and a building with benches for walkers. To the left of Agioi Anargyroi is another small beach to which you can swim in about five minutes. This beach is called Tourkoneri and it is surrounded by pine forest. |
| Agios Dimitrios Beach |
Agios Dimitrios is probably the most popular beach of the island and also one of the prettiest. As a matterof fact it is concidered as one of the most picturesque beaches of the world. It is situated at a 14 kilometers distance of Patitiri. The beach is named after a monastery which has now been completely destroyed. Only its remains can be seen next to the main road. |
| Agios Petros Beach |
The beach of Agios Petros is situated in a protected bay, surrounded by hills and a row of pine trees. It is a pleasant beach with some pebbles, but also with some pieces with just sand. On the beach itself there are no facilities but during the afternoon there is some shade to be found among the pines The beach takes its name from the Byzantine church of Agios Petros that once stood here, and of which now only the remains can be seen on the hill hidden among the bushes. |
| Chrisi Milia Beach |
Chrisi Milia Beach is situated about five kilometers northeast of the harbour of Patitiri. You can reach it by car, bike or on foot from Patitiri or by boat in 15 minutes from the harbor. The walk takes about 30 / 40 minutes and is worth it for the scenery. On the way you walk partly through a pine tree forest. Chrisi Milia Beach has a small taverna and there are umbrellas and sunbeds for rent, but you can also find shade under the trees. During high season there is also a possibility to do water sports on Chrisi Milia Beach. |
| Gerakas Beach |
For a long time the Marine Research Station was located in Gerakas. They were engaged in the study and conservation of rare Monachus Monachus seal that lives in the area around Alonissos. Due to financial problems this station is now closed. The bay is mainly used by fishermen and the beach of Gerakas is not very attractive. There are no facilities at Gerakas Beach, so visitors should bring their own supply of water and food. |
| Glyfa Beach |
In the nearby village there are hotels, tavernas, mini markets and a camp site. Glyfa beach is a quite a large beach with sand and some small pebbles, and with clear sea water. You can reach this beach by car. There is a large parking close to the beach. There is also a bus service from Patitiri to Glyfa Beach and the journey takes about 20 minutes. The surroundings of the beach are green and it is not overcrowded yet. At the beach there are a couple of tavernas and you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas here. During the high season there are sometimes also small excursion boats or taxi boats that can take you to other beaches in the surrounding area and to the nearby islands of Alonissos. |
| Kalamakia Beach |
It is not really recommended to go swimming in Kalamakia because there are much better beaches in the area, for example in Steni Vala. Many people go there for sunbathing and a dip in the sea, and then drive to Kalamakia for lunch or dinner because the fish tavernas there are very good. |
| Kalami Beach and Kefala Beach |
| Katerinas Vala Beach |
Katerinas Vala is a small and quiet beach with white pebbles. There are no sunbeds and umbrellas for rent and there are no other facilities at Katerinas Vala Beach, so you must bring your own water and food with you if you plan to stay on this beach for a longer time. The beach is surrounded by pine trees that gives its visitors some shade. |
| Kokkinokastro Beach |
The beach of Kokkinokastro (red castle) is believed to be the place of the ancient capital Ikos. Around it are the red clifs and pine tree forests. Opposite the beach is the islet of Vrachos which is believed to have been connected to the island of Alonissos. The name of the adjacent bay "Vythisma" means "sunken", in remembrance of the ancient town that once stood here.. |
| Lalarias Beach and Strovilo Beach |
It is also possible to rent a small motor boat and explore the coastline and the isolated beaches that you cannot reach on foot or by car in this way - (see Alonissos Boat Rental). Like this you can go and explore the Blue Cave and the beaches of Lalarias and Strovilo in peace and quiet on your own. |
| Leftos Gialos Beach |
You can drive To Leftos Gialos Beach by car in about ten minutes (7,5 kilometer) or by boat in 40 minutes from Patitiri. A taxi to the beach costs around ten euro (2013). The downside is that there are sometimes organised excursion boats, that are on their way to visit Skopelos and Skiathos island and than also make a stop on this beach, so their guests can do some swimming. During those hours it can get a bit busy on Leftos Gialos Beach, but don't worry: the tourists from the boats don't stay for ever. |
| Marpounta Beach |
Marpounta Beach is also the site of the large Marpunta Village Hotel and bungalow complex, which is highly preferred by the Italians. It can get quite busy here, especially during the high season in July and August. If you are looking for peace and quiet it is better to go to one of the other nearby beaches in the south of Alonissos, such as Mikro Mourtias or Megalos Mourtias Beach. |
| Megalos Mourtias Beach |
The beach is a favourite for the people of the Chora because they can walk down to it. The distance to the harbour of Patitiri is about six kilometer. The beach is shallow and so it's easy to get into the sea and safe for small children. It is also protected from strong winds. You can rent umbrellas and sunbeds but it is also possible to get some shade from the olive trees on the beach. Megalas Mourtias is a popular destination for people that like underwater snorkeling. A litte bit further, a 3 kilometer distance of Patitiri, are the two pretty beaches of Marpounta, where you can also rent sunbeds and umbrellas. |
| Megali Ammos Beach |
In this area, in the northwest of the island of Alonissos there are several nice beaches, such Tsakalia Beach, Gialia Beach, Vrisitsa Beach, and Mikros Mourtias. There are several small private coves with beaches where you can find peace and quiet. It is a bit more difficult to get there, and sometimes it involves a bit of climbing, but it is worth the effort. There are not many facilities in this part of the island, so it is advisable to bring your own water and something to eat if you want to explore this part of Alonissos island. |
| Mikros Mourtias Beach |
One of the locals of Alonissos "warned" me saying "It is a very silent and peaceful place so don't be surprised if you meet some nude swimmers there". In high season there might be Greek families (from outside of Alonissos) being offended, but the locals don't have a problem with naturism here, because they are used to it. If you get a complaint just tell the to buzz off (like we would do). There are plenty of other beaches for them where they can show off their textiles The beach of Mikros Mourtias is backed up by olive trees if you want to get some shade. |
| Milia Beach |
Milia Beach is situated about five kilometers northeast of the harbour of Patitiri. You can reach it by car, bike or on foot from Patitiri or by boat in 15 minutes from the harbor. The walk takes about 30 / 40 minutes and is worth it for the scenery. On the way you walk partly through a pine tree forest. There are no sunbeds and umbrellas for rent on Milia Beach and there are no other facilities. If you want to lie under the shade of an umbrella or you want something to eat or have a drink at a tavern you can go to next door Chrisi Milia Beach. |
| Plakes Beach |
I don't have any more information on this beach. There are no facilities here (no taverna, no sunbeds, no umbrellas and no accommodations but the camping, for as far as I know, but pherhaps there are some facilities that go with the camping...as I understand there is a small caf and there are toilets here...). If you want to spend time on Plakes beach bring your own water supply and something to eat. |
| Roussoum Gialos Beach |
In the Turkish period Roussom Gialos was the port where the wine of Alonissos was traded and where taxes had to be paid. The name Roussom therefore has its origins in the word "Rsum", which means "tax" in Turkish. |
| Sarafi, Anemomilos and Grava Beach |
| Spartines Beach |
Spartines Beach is located north of Votsi, at a distance of two kilometers from Patitiri. It is a quiet beach with pebbles and sand, and clear greenish blue waters. In Spartines Beach are no facilities, so if you go there and want to sunbathe, you have to bring your own water and food. Spartines Beach actually consists of two large beaches separated by a large rock, and a smaller beach next to each other. Because it is so isolated, the beach is frequented by naturists. |
| Steni Vala Beach |
| Tourkoneri Beach |
In the wider area or Tourkneri you can find several other unspoiled small pebble beaches such as for instance Agioi Anargyroi Beach and Megali Ammos. On all these beaches are no facilities, so hikers should bring a supply of water. In this area in the southwest of Alonissos the hills that you have to climb are not very steep and the paths are quite wide: the perfect piece of Alonissos for lovers of nature and tranquility that want to find a beach to themselves. |
| Tsoukalia Beach |
Tsoukalia Beach is situated in a bay surrounded by pine trees, on the western side of the island of Alonissos. You can access this beach (also by car) through a dirt path and most of the times it's pretty quiet. There are no sunbeds and umbrellas for rent and there are no other facilities (no tavern). Directly next to the beach stands an old windmill which survived in pretty good shape. |
| Tzortzi Gialos Beach |
The long, narrow beach of Tzortzi Gialos is located in a protected cove and surrounded by trees, such as cypress and olive trees. You will not find any high waves here and it is an ideal place to go snorkeling. The first thirty metres you walk into the sea are shallow and you will still have your face above water level. This also makes it a suitable beach for families with small children. There are no umbrellas and sun beds for rent on Tzortzi Beach, but the trees around and on the beach provide some shade. |
| Valitsa Beach |
At the small beach Of Valitsa you cannot rent umbrellas and sunbeds and there are also no other facilities. If you are looking for sunbeds or something to eat it is better to go to nearby beaches such as Marpounta Beach or Megalos Moutias Beach, where you do have these facilities. These beaches are better. You head to Valitsa Beach for peace and quiet. |
| Vithisma or Vythisma Beach |
If you do not want or you cannot visit the beach by boat, you take the road to Marpounta Beach and watch out untill you see the sign that points to the beach of Megalas Mourtias. The path to Vythisma Beach starts here as well, but be warned: it is quite steep and sometimes it's quite difficult to see what direction it is going.
| Votsi Beach |
The beach of Votsi is a real jewel, accessible by stone steps descending from the main road of the settlement of Votsi. Opposite this little marvel is a picturesque, charming tiny harbour with a couple of lovely traditional fish taverns and little fishing boats mooring at the port. In the village of Votsi on the island of Alonissos there are a couple of hotels, apartments and studios that rent out rooms - click here. |
| Vrisitsa Beach |
This beach which is situated in the northwest of the island of Alonissos can be reached via the road that leads from Chora and it can be seen from the road as you drive by. Vrisitsa Beach consists of dark sand and pebbles. In the surrounding are a couple of other nice beaches, such as Vythisma, Mourtia and Marpounta Beach. Vrisitsa Beach gets its name from the fact that it is quite small and because the cove where the beach is located is surrounded by a green hill. The hill makes sure that the beach is quite protected and there is usually not much burden on the wind. Normally it is not very crowded on this beach. |
| Yalia or Gyalia Beach |
In the sea at Gyalia Beach there are some rocks and because the beach is situated in the north of the island there can be some wind from time to time as well. At Gyalia there is also a spring which makes the sea water quite cold. Summarised: a picturesque beach that you might want to go and have a look at, but if you are looking for longtime sunbathing and swimming there are maybe better options. |
