The largest town on the Sithonia peninsula is called Neos Marmaras. This city is located on the west side of the island between Porto Carras (one of the largest 5 star resorts in Greece) and Paradisos (a small resort with about 40 inhabitants) at about 125 km away from Thessaloniki. Most of the inhabitants of Neos Marmaras originate from refugees that came here from the Turkish island of Marmaras in 1925 and some came from nearby small mountain villages. Many people here live from tourism, but also fishing and agriculture (olives, wine and honey) are an important source of income.

Off the coast at 5 kilometer distance southwest of Neos Marmaras lies the uninhabited islet Kefylos. This island rises steeply from the sea. It is covered with pine and olive trees. It is suspected that there was a Roman military facility on the northeast side of the island of Kefylos. The island is now mainly used as pastureland. Because of its shape it is sometimes called "Turtle island".

A little further south are you can find the Spalathronisia islets (three in total), of which the largest island is called Spalathronisi. It was recently sold by the Greek government for 10 million euros. The island has a rocky coast and is covered with bushes and some olive trees. It is located about 500 meters from the coast and is now privately owned.

There are about 3,000 permanent residents in the city Of Neos Marmaras, but during the tourist season, the number of people in Neos Marmaras is a multiple of that. The main industry in Neos Marmaras is tourism and the town is the home of many, sometimes quite large, accommodations. There is plenty of choice in restaurants, bars and discotheques.

Neos Marmaras has several large and small sandy beaches and coves in the area, which are mostly organized by sunbeds and parasols. You can enjoy various water sports. In many places the pine trees grow as far as the beach.

Paradisos beach is situated just a little north of Neos Marmaros. It is a long and narrow beach of about one kilometer in length. The southern part is slightly less wide than the northern part and consists mainly of pebbles. Here you can find some small scale accommodations. The northern part of the beach is wider and more sandy. Here you will also find a number of hotels. At the beach of Paradisos there are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent.

The main beach of Neos Marmaras is located on the south side in the town itself. It is a long sandy beach that has received the Blue Flag, which means that it is kept clean and tidy that it is safe to swim. The beach of Neos Marmaras slopes gently into the sea making it safe for small children. At the end of the beach is the Porto Carras beach. Around the beach of Neos Marmaras are all kinds of facilities and also many of the accommodations are located around the beach.

Porto Carras and Kohi beach are the two beaches near the very large 5 stars all inclusive Porto Carras Meliton hotel. Here at this hotel complex you find also the largest private marina of northern Greece. There are several restaurants and pools at the hotel, a spa and golf course. The beaches are not really authentic anymore, but it still attracts many people because everything is arranged. There are many facilities in the area and of course there are sunbeds and umbrellas for hire at both beaches. Kohi beach has a beach bar where music is played throughout the day. It is located south of the marina. Both Porto Carras as Kohi beach are quite large sandy beaches. South of Kohi beach you can find some bays with "secret" beaches.

The beach of Agia Kiriaki is situated at a distance of 9 kilometers south of Neos Marmaras. The beach is easily accessible from a junction of the main road. Agia Kyriaki beach is a 400 meter long sandy beach with facilities, surrounded by trees that provide shade at certain times of the day. At the beach is a campsite with a restaurant. In high season there are a number of umbrellas on the beach. The water here is shallow and the seabed is sandy. Because the beach is positioned in a well protected bay it is also very suitable for families with children.

A little further south is the beach of Koutsoupia. Surrounded by dense vegetation Koutsoupia is a beach with some sand but still mostly pebbles on it. Also on the seabed there are some pebbles and stones. In front of the beach there is an island to which you can swim. Just south of Koutsoupia beach is another very pretty and slightly smaller beach of 150 meters in length. On the beaches of Koutsoupia there are no facilities and you have to bring your own water if you want to stay here for a while. There are no sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. Advantage of these beaches is that this is much quieter than on most other beaches in the area.

Spalathronisia beach consists of four beaches opposite the archipelago of the same name. All beaches of Spalathronisia are a combination of sand and pebbles. At one of the beaches there is a campsite and there are a few small hotels. There is also a pier from where boats depart for an excursion to the Kassandra peninsula. At the beaches there is a taverna and a supermarket. The trees grow as far as on the beach, so it is not going to be difficult to find some shade here. The most northern beach of the four is the best protected one. If you are not a guest of the campsite you can not go through the campsite to the beach but have to walk around it a bit.
