Avlona is the most northerly village on the island of Karpathos. It is a small and traditional village situated in a valley between the mountains Steoe and Oros. There are quite a few houses but few people live there (in 2001 there were 16). Most houses in Avlona are empty and many are dilapidated. The pieces of land around the houses are walled in by stacked gray stones. Within these walls are concrete circles on which people thresh their grain. Around the village there is some agricultural area and sometimes inhabitants of Karpathos come to the village when they start harvesting.

From Avlona you can make walks through the mountains to the village of Diafani and to the north of Diafani located Vananda beach or to the beach of Vroukounda. They are walks for the experienced hiker because you have to pay attention to where you are walking and they are walks that take a few hours. Some excursion buses that take the tourists to the village of Olympos also drive to Avlona and then return again. The distance between Olympos and Avlona is about eight kilometers. In the village there is a small taverna where the tourists can eat or drink something (Taverna Avlona).
