The village of Amira is situated in the south of the Heraklion district. The distance to Heraklion is about 70 kilometers. There are approximately 450 people living in Amiras. The village is reached via the route Heraklion - Knossos - Spilia - Peza - Arkalohori - Viannos - Amiras. During the Second World War many people were shot or imprisoned in this area because they resisted the German occupation. About twenty villages were set on fire by the Germans and the area was bombed.
In memory of the fallen victims a beautiful war memorial was erected in this place, near the village of Amiras.
