<The Byzantine church of the All-holy Virgin in Pervolitsa on the island of Crete
The Byzantine All-Holy Virgin Church and the Bay of Pervolitsa are situated on a picturesque spot on the east coast of the Akrotiri peninsula in Crete. Although Pervolitsa is indicated by a sign it is not easy to find. At one point you come to a junction where the road divides itself in three ways. There are no signs pointing to Pervolitsa any more. The left road (the best) leads to a factory. The road on the right continues into the peninsula and is rapidly turning worse. You take the middle road until you see a kind of parking space on the right hand side with a gate that opens onto a path. If you look closely can also see a small sign with "Pervolitsa" and an arrow. You can open the gate and walk through. You have to close it again, because it is intended to keep the goats inside. There are a few houses. At one moment you see the church appear on the horizon. Next to the church are the ruins of older structures. Unfortunately inside the church the old frescoes are no longer there.
The bay of Pervolitsa itself is only accessible by boat. The water has a lovely turquoise color and it is a popular spot for diving because here many large fish swimming here and there are several ancient shipwrecks. The church and the bay of Pervolitsa are in the flight path of the planes that land on Chania airport, so a good place also for plane spotting.
