THE VILLAGE OF ORINO IN CRETE

Orino is a small and very quiet mountain village with about 250 inhabitants. It is reached via a exit from the main road that leads through the coastal village of Mavros Kolimbos (just east of Koutsouras). The distance to Makrigialos is approximately 14 kilometers. Orino lies at the beginning of a gorge, which is known for its red butterflies. The gorge continues to Koutsouras. In 1993 there has been a forest fire that badly affected the nature and the amount of butterflies. Yet it is still a beautiful nature reserve. The ride from Mavros Kolymbos is breathtakingly beautiful and leads through pine forests that grow on the mountain slopes, interspersed with a single olive tree field.

In the village Orino there are two attractive churches and there are old houses with walnut trees, bunches of grapes, flowers and fruit trees. In the summer a small river flows through the village and there are hiking trails to explore. For those who just want to make a short stop in the village, there is a kafenion where you can order a drink or a small bite to eat.
