The village of Vrises is renowned for it's goat cheese and yoghurt. Vrysses (or Vrisses, Vrises) is a new village dating back to 1925. It is located on the
road which links the north coast with Sfakia. There is not much to do in
Vrysses but the rivers that flow through its centre make it a nice place to
escape the summer heat, in the shade of the giant plane trees. Vrises is also
famous for its excellent yoghurt.
In Vrises you can find all amenities like a bakery, a mini market, a super market, tavernas and kafenions, a bank and a petrol station.
Around Vrises on the foot of the White Mountains you can find many traditional villages and Byzantine churches with frescoes.
Once in the place of the current Vrisses there were two inns that were there fto accommodate the travelers and merchants that wanted to go to the south to Chora Sfakion. Today Vrisses is still the place where you can find the road to this lovely village on the southern coast of Crete (but beware, because before you know it you drive on the wrong road and end up somewhere quite different).
Now the people of Vrisses sit in the shade of the trees in the kafenions. "The Vrisses Way" (see picture below) is told to be one of the best places to try Sfakia Pies. This is a pancake filled with cheese and honey.
