We call the beach in the village "the beach of tears" because we usually spend the last day of our holiday here.
Palaiokastro is situated 5km west of Heraklion on the new national road to Agia Pelagia. It is partly situated underneath a viaduct. There is a small beach, a bay with a few fishermans boats and a couple of taverns. The noise of the traffic doesn't seem to get through to the village though even though high up you can see the cars rush by. Up on the hill there are the remains of a Venetian fortress wall, and on the beach there is a small tower. Next and partly in front of that they have placed an ugly small building that looks like a public toilet (the must have read my website because in 2015 it was no longer there, haha). Further down the village it's very peaceful, and you will find the church, houses with fruitgardens, and small mandarine and orange fields.
