The beach of Karteros on the island of Crete
The beach at Amnissos is called Karteros Beach and this is a beautiful sandy beach with facilities such as sunbeds and umbrellas. It is situated at 8 kilometers east of the capital Heraklion. There are also a number of taverns. It is also pretty big, about three kilometers in length. You just need to be a lover of plane-spotting, because the beach is very close to the airport and you're in the flight path. The beach does have the "blue flag", which means that it is clean and safe for swimming.
Karteros beach is named after a Byzantine General who landed here in the year 824 to liberate Crete from the Saracens. He didn't succeed in doing this and was defeated.
Karteros Beach is also the beginning of two gorges that are easy to walk (but quite long). The hike starts at the ruined village of Kato Astraki, which was abandoned in 1930. The path leads down from here to the gorge and you will pass the ruins of the Basillica of Aghios Georgios. 100 Metres further you will pass the remains of another Byzantine church, the Panagia church. During the walk through the gorge of Karteros you will pass old windmills, remains of Byzantine houses and the old church of of Saint Nicholas.
