map of Crete Gouves is a village on the north coast of Crete. It lies between Gournes and Analipsi, 18 kilometers east of the capital Heraklion. Actually it is more a sort of area rather than a village. It also consists of several villages: Kato Gouves (down at the beaches) and the older traditional village of Pano Gouves which is situated on a higher level. Usually when people talk about the village Gouves they mean the village at the bottom by the sea - so Kato Gouves. Kato Gouves is mainly created for tourists. The village is accessible via the Old National Road that runs between Heraklion and Chersonissos. You can also take the New National Road and take the exit to Gouves (indicated with a sign). The last few miles to the village you will drive on the old route.

You can find many shops with souvenirs, clothes and anything you can think of in Gouves and there are quite a few hotels and apartment complexes where you can stay. Along the quay and in the village there are many restaurants and taverns to choose from, including two Chinese restaurants and fast food restaurants. There are also bars and there is some night life. In addition the village has several other facilities such as a pharmacy, a medical clinic, several supermarkets and ATMs. More importantly perhaps is that there are good beaches in the village. The "boulevard" of the village is a few miles long and when you follow it you will pass several sandy beaches. These beaches are organized and you can rent umbrellas and sun bed and there is a possibility for various water sports like jet skiing, water skiing and canoeing. It all sounds terribly touristy but still it is pleasant to stay here (especially out of season). It can not compare with places like Malia or Chersonissos where it is much busier and more commercial, and where traffic is much busier. In one way or another there is a relaxed atmosphere here and it is really not that busy.

Xilino Tavern in Gouves

Xilino Tavern is situated at the seafront of Gouves and has comfortable seats. The serve food from the Greek kitchen and international kitchen, grilled dishes, breakfasts, omelettes, crepes, fish dishes, pizzas, different appetizers and snacks. We had an English breakfast and a cappuccino here. The cappuccino tasted good and was served with whipped milk. The English breakfast had toast, jam, a sausage, one slice of bacon, 2 eggs, fried mushrooms, tomato and white beans in tomato sauce. No orange juice.

Gouves Hotels The family-run Sevini Apartments is located in Kato Gouves, only a few metres from the beach. Sevini consists of 8 apartments, all with balconies with countryside and sea views. There are cooking facilities with all accessories and a fridge in every apartment; clean linen is supplied twice a week. Air conditioning and a safe can be provided for a fee. Sevini Apartments offers free Wi-Fi. Boat trips and bus tours can be arranged anywhere on the island. Car rental can also be arranged. Staff will be happy to offer suggestions on restaurants.
