The village of Myrsini or Mirsini on Crete
The village or Myrsini Mirsini is a small and old village which is situated on the road that leads from Sitia - Skopi - Exo Mouliana - Mesa Mouliana - to Agios Nikolaos. The distance to Sitia is about 23 kilometers. This is a very scenic route where you can occasionally make a stop to enjoy the views. Mirsini, like the surrounding villages, is a quiet Cretan village with a white church. This church stands on an elevated position from the road and consists of two houses with in the middle at the front on the roof the clock tower. The Agios Antonios church in the village dates from the 17th century. Just outside the village you can see the old Kornaros tower.
Nearby on the hill Asprospilia a Minoan cemetery with tombs has been excavated.
Mirsini is surrounded by high mountains. It is said that Mirsini with its narrow streets is the most traditional village in the east of Crete. In the village there are many flowers and fruit trees. Mirsini means "myrtle" and many of theses bushes that stay forever green grow in the area. Mirsini lies in a fertile area and most of the inhabitants of the village live from the olive oil production.
