The village of Kaloni on the island of Crete

Kaloni is a small village located south of the capital Heraklion. It is reached via the route Heraklion - Knossos - Spilia - Peza - Kaloni.
The village is long stretched and the houses are mostly along the main road that runs through the village. Many of the houses in Kaloni are falling apart, but the two churches are well painted. The church just outside the village seems to be newly built to me. The dilapidated houses are occasionally interspersed with a refurbished house, sometimes with a well-manicured garden. The village has an old fountain (Turkish?) and there is a monument to Nikos Kazantzakis, one of the most important Greek writers of the 20th century. He also was a communist and a Cretan hero who helped save 150 000 Greek refugees from starvation in Russia. Nikos Kazantzakis has its own museum in the village of Mirtia, which lies 15 kilometers south of Heraklion.

From the main road that runs through the village looking in between the houses you can see the surroundings and the village of Melesses, with its large church. Kaloni is quiet and traditional. There are some pomegranate trees and there are some flowers along the roadside. I have not come across any facilities.
