The villages of Livadas and Koustogerako near Sougia and the Imbros Gorge in Crete
Livadas is a little mountain village north of Sougia, in the Sougia gorge. It
was a place of partizans fighting against the Germans in Wordwar 2. Name signs
filled with bullet holes, and a memorial for the people that died, will point
you towards the village. This is also the road that will take you to an even
higher placed village called Koustogerako, which has a memorial of its own,
with a big black statue of a partizan.
In Koustogerako the Germans wanted to execute all the women of the village This resulted in a fight with the partizans and many people were killed.
Livadas has got a very picturesque
church, and part of the village is situated on a small hill that contains some
ruins. It overlooks the Sougia gorge. Koustogerako is like Livadas very quiet,
and it's the starting point for mountain walks. There are donkeys and turkeys
in the village, but as far as I could see not that many people.
