The village of Choudetsi on the island of Crete

Choudetsi or Houdetsi is a pretty big village that lies south of the capital Heraklion, in an area where many grapes are grown for wine production. There are approximately 900 people living in Choudetsi. The distance to Heraklion is 23 kilometers and the village of Archanes is situated at 3 kilometers distance. The village is reached via the route Heraklion - Knossos - Peza (or Archanes) - Choudetsi. Choudetsi is known for its music festival, which is held once a year in August and lasts for 4 days.
In the village there is a large square with tavernas and also along the road that runs through the village you can find several other eateries. There is a war memorial, a pharmacy and there are mini-markets in the village. The number of accommodations is limited. In the village there are fruit trees (pears, lemons) and lots of flowers. There is a river that runs through the village. This is why the area is so fertile. The Church of Choudetsi dates from 1874 and there is a folklore museum in the village, where objects from older Cretan times are exhibited.

According to documents there was already a village here in 1279, but excavations have shown that the area was also inhabited during the Minoan period. The Panagia Spiliotissa Monastery is situated between Choudetsi and the village of Agios Vasilios and can be reached via a path (500 meter). Along this path are the Byzantine churches of Saint John and Saint Anthony and two old water mills. The monastery was built on the remains of a church that dates from the 11th century, and which was built inside a rock. The monastery itself dates from the 17th century.
