Mochlos is a small fishing village between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. It has around one hundred inhabitants. The village of is one of the few parts of the coast accessible in this region. There is no bus stop at Mochlos. It's easiest reached from the village of Sfaka from the new national road (this is also the closest bus stop for Mochlos village). The easiest way of course to reach Mochlos in by renting a car, but Mochlos also has two taxi drivers that can pick you up from the village of Sfaka (Nikos +30 6976630729 or Kostas +30 6972818636).

Mochlos has extensive Minoan remains, most of which are on the island with the same name (Mochlos) opposite the village, next to the little chapel. A Minoan settlement was found in the south of the island and also a cemetery and several tombs were uncovered in the west. Sometimes there's a boat that will take you there, but I have seen people swim to the island (see the videos on the bottom of this page). The boat can take you to the island of Mochlos or to the island of Psira. Mochlos island is not far out of the coast, only about 150 meters. In Minoan times the island was probably an important harbour and still connected to the mainland of Crete. Also on the mainland of Crete, behind the current village of Mochlos, two work places have been discovered. In one bronze, ivory and stone was processed and in the other one pots were baked. The remains of the Minoan workshops can be found on the seafront next to the big parking lot, near the church. Furthermore in the mountains of the area tombs have been found where people were buried.

There are a hand full of of tavernas and there are rooms, studios, apartments and even villas (one with a private pool) for rent in the village (see below). Inside the village you find a mini market and a couple of other small shops. There is hardly any traffic in Mochlos, so you can find peace and quiet here. Night life? They don't know what that is. But this is part of the charm of this place. There is also a small harbour and a stony beach in Mochlos. Outside the village you find a couple of more beaches that are better than the small town beach itself. One of them is a small sandy beach, the others are pebble beaches. A fifteen minute walk will take you there.

A lot of tourists that visit Mochlos are returning guests that come back not because it has wonderful beaches but they have fallen for the special atmosphere of the village that they describe as magic. Just like I had that feeling in another village that I visited, called Ravdoucha, it is asif you have landed on another island.

This restaurant is located on the waterfront in the center of the village of Mochlos. It is run by a very friendly couple from Switzerland. The woman takes our order from the menu and we see also her husband, the cook, who brings some food to the table. Nice is that there are a number of original and delicious vegetarian dishes on the menu here as well. We order tzatziki, the Potato Manolis Way (a hollowed out potato with a delicious cheese sauce) and a Dorado fish. The tzatziki and the house wine are very tasty. Everything tastes fine. The vegetables are perfectly cooked, just a little crunchy. A very good restaurant in a nice location.
