The Milonas or Mylonas waterfall on the island of Crete

The Milonas waterfall is located just north of the village of Ferma in the south of the Lasithi area. The waterfall can be reached via a few turns and hiking trails. We took the route a little west of Ferma. The exit is indicated with a sign. You can drive down the dirt road or park at the start of the route. The walk takes a little bit over an hour from the start. If you continue to the path where you can climb to the waterfall, it will take approximately half an hour. The path is steep and on some parts not very easy. For people with fear of heights like me, the last two hundred meters are a faux pas. You then have to walk through a kind of narrow basin to get there and hope that you will not encounter oncoming traffic while avoiding looking down or stumbling.

The Milonas waterfall is 40 meters high and the highest waterfall in Crete with permanently flowing water. Only the Mastoras waterfall is higher, but that one only has running water during the rainy season. The scenery on the way to the waterfall is beautiful, with many century-old plane trees, mastic trees, pine trees and oleanders and a flowing stream. The route is indicated with red arrows. On this route there is only one bench for those seeking some rest.
