Kalami is a small coastal village just east of Souda, next to the hill / mountain with the Izzedine fortress on it. Kalami is not very far from the larger village of Kalives and it has a couple of small quiet beaches (one sandy and a couple of pebble beaches) that look out over the Bay of Souda. Chania town is at a 10 kilometers distance and Kalives is a five minutes drive away. although Kalami is relatively small there are some accommodations. There are a couple of holiday houses for rent at the beach below but not so many apartments and studios. For as far as I have seen there was not anything like a tavern down at the beach (only along the road higher up), so if you decide you want to spend some time here it would be wise to bring some water.

If you come from the direction of Chania and take the exit to Kalives and Almirida from the freeway you actually almost immediately drive into the village of Kalami - and before you know it you have passed it. On top of the rock on the right hand side you see a Turkish fortress and a tavern. The exit to the beaches is almost immediately on your left as you drive in and it goes over a steep narrow road that leads towards the sea. On the pier in the village there are men with fishing rods. There are not many houses here and you'll pass a few small beaches. On the first one there are some beach umbrellas. Along the way are many blackberry bushes and a bit further left a banana tree.

Not many accommodations ar offered at the small beaches of Kalami and you are not going to find big hotels or complexes with apartments here. I've seen this piece of the Apokoronas and I have the impression that many people do not even know it's there, and that actually everyone drives past it. A spot for people who like a lot of peace and quiet, because there really is not much more to do than a little hiking and swimming in the sea. It is convenient to rent a car if you're staying in Kalami beach so you can go and see the attractions of the island. It is also possible to take a taxi from the airport of Chania to Kalami beach and lock yourself up to unwind for some time. There are some facilities in the village, but for large supermarkets, plenty of shops and medical help you have to go to the nearby village of Kalives.
